Star Trek: The Next Generation (Season 2) DVD Review

5 January 2009 | 19:47 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Nominated for 58 Emmys, including one for Outstanding Drama Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation fulfilled all the potential and promise anticipated of a long-awaited successor to the original 1960s series: Star Trek. Created by a former L.A. police officer, Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek TV series morphed into a franchise famous for the unprecedented fanatical devotion of its audience. Lasting only three seasons during its original network run, Star Trek struck gold with its syndicated reruns, launching a number of motion pictures featuring the original cast as well as novels, comic books, collectibles, and reams of Star Trek-related memorabilia. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) became the first TV series to follow on the heels of the original, and its success would spark the creation of three additional series - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), Star Trek: Voyager (1995), and Star Trek: Enterprise (2001). But The Next Generation remained the most popular spin-off. Despite new characters and new episodes, the mission remained the same as before - “to boldly go where no man has gone before…” And to continue the rich tradition of the Star Trek name - a mission Star Trek: The Next Generation accomplishes with relative ease…

Star Trek: The Next Generation takes place in the 24th Century, almost one-hundred years after Captain Kirk’s crew set out to explore strange new worlds. Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart - I Claudius) commands the USS Enterprise-D and its diverse crew of humans, cyborgs, and varying life forms. Accompanying him on his voyage is an entirely new cast of passengers and crew including Commander William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes - North & South), Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner), Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Lt. Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby), Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn), Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and her son Ensign Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton)… Together, they struggle against numerous obstacles to carry out the mission of the USS Enterprise: “To explore strange new worlds… To seek out new life; new civilizations… To boldly go where no one has gone before!” This pioneering attitude, coupled with imaginative and brilliantly-produced alien worlds, provides Star Trek with its unique allure and special place within American pop culture - especially those episodes from the original series, widely regarded as the most popular of the Star Trek franchise…

The Star Trek: The Next Generation (Season 2) DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere “The Child” in which Enterprise crewmember Trois experiences an unexplained pregnancy as the Enterprise rushes to escape from a system wrought with a dangerous plague… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include “A Matter of Honor” in which Riker joins an officer exchange program which places him on a Klingon ship while the Enterprise must learn to deal with its own officer exchange participant, and “Pen Pals” in which strange earthquakes and tectonic activity upon the planet where Data’s pen pal lives prompts members of the Enterprise to get to the bottom of the mystery…

Tips for Making Your Swimsuits Last Longer

4 January 2009 | 18:02 | Finery | Comments Off

Summer is nearly here and we will be spending more time wearing swimsuits and some of the newer performance fabrics.

The following guidelines will help you keep your swimsuits in a great shape but accept the fact that swimsuits have a short lifespan. More so if you swim in chlorinated water and spend long hours in hot tubs.
However the following tips will help you maintain your swimsuits nice and fit for a longer time.

1To slow down the fading of color soak your swimsuit in a mixture of vinegar and water for about half an hour. Use one spoon vinegar and one quart of water.

2If the swimsuit is already saturated with clean water then it absorbs less chlorinated water, so shower with fresh water before you move into the pool.

3After you finish the swimming pool fun do wash your swimsuit with cool water and rinse a little.

4Use of a suit cleaner will extend the life of your swimsuit.

5Wash your swimsuits and rinse in cool water. Roll up in a clean, lint free, and light-colored or fade resistant towel and squeeze again.

6Air-dry and not sun dry.

7Do not machine-wash your swimsuit.

8Do not bleach, iron or wash with white clothes.

9–Do not leave rolled up in wet towels or in gym bag. Moisture left in your suit for extended periods of time will lead to unwanted odor and suit failure.

10–Wear only your oldest suit in a hot tub or Jacuzzi

11–Clean regularly as needed, treat stains quickly and use a fabric softener only if recommended.

There is now available sun protective clothing, which provides the maximum available protection from the sun’s ultra-violet rays.

A few companies offers a wide selection of the highest quality, hard-to-find sun protection items for infants through 12 year olds.

How to remove stains.

If it’s a blood stain then soak it in cold water for 30 minutes.

If it’s a chewing gum then apply ice cubes or cold water

For fresh diary products use cool water. Older ones require removal of crusts.

“Friends With Money” - A Review

3 January 2009 | 17:31 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Screened March 26, 2006

Florida Film Festival

Back in 2002, when Jennifer Aniston was married to Brad Pitt and co-starring in the hugely successful “Friends,’ she played the title role in director Miguel Arteta’s independent film “The Good Girl.” Her portrayal of a drab, depressed store clerk trapped in an unhappy marriage to a pot-bellied house painter was so moving that she received a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award.

At the time, Arteta told me in an interview that “Jennifer is a naturally happy person and had to learn how to reflect the appearance of someone who is severely depressed. She wore ankle and wrist weights for weeks before filming in order to help her slump over.”

I’m guessing that Aniston doesn’t need the weights anymore to be convincing.

In “Friends With Money,” writer-director Nicole Holofcener’s third feature film, Aniston plays another drab, depressed character, only this time she’s the friend without a husband, without a promising future, and (as the title implies) without any money. The film is promoted as an ensemble piece which includes Catherine Keener, Frances McDormand, and Joan Cusack as three long-time friends of Olivia (Aniston’s downtrodden teacher now working as a maid). However, “Friends With Money” begins with Olivia’s story, centers around developments in her personal life, and ends with a possibility (rather than a promise) for her future.

As we watch Olivia beg, borrow, and steal to get by — including stealing another woman’s husband for a few romantic encounters — her wealthy friends struggle with their own problems. Ensemble or not, clearly the sticky-fingered Olivia (i.e., Aniston) steals the show, as well.

Christine (Keener) realizes that she and her husband — screenwriting collaborators — don’t communicate anymore. Confronted by her own mortality and a strikingly effeminate husband, fashion designer Jane (McDormand) fears that she’s losing control. On the other hand, Frannie (Cusack) is happily married and independently wealthy, and has no significant worries except the basic inconveniences of daily existence.

The men in their lives, played by Simon McBurney, Jason Isaacs, Scott Caan, Greg Germann, and Bob Stephenson, have their own intricate stories to tell.

We get to view these tangled relationships from every angle, and are privy to conversations between the four women, between two of the women gossiping about the others, between the individual couples, between friends and clients, between friends and lovers (or past/potential lovers), between the men, and various combinations of all of the above. It may be complicated keeping track, but it’s certainly lots of fun.

Honestly written and sensitively portrayed, this Sony Pictures Classics Release reveals the comedy and drama of modern couples in Los Angeles trying to work things out, but “Friends With Money” shares the triumphs and frustrations of middle-aged women everywhere as they come to terms with their social, personal, familial, and sexual status in life.

Oz (Season 2) DVD Review

3 January 2009 | 1:13 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Recipient of two Emmy nominations and varying critical acclaim, Oz is considered by many to be one of the greatest prison dramas ever devised. Created by former St. Elsewhere writer Tom Fontana, the show was one of a number of highly touted and commercially successful HBO original series created in the 1990s. Initially aired in the summer of 1997, Oz built a strong following of viewers addicted to its vivid depiction of American prison life and hypnotic voyeuristic window into the bad side of American life. Along with The Sopranos and Sex And The City, it rose to prominence as one of the top series on HBO…

The Oz (Season 2) DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere “The Tip” in which Oz takes a rest following a deadly riot that left two officers and six prisoners dead. Governor James Devlin (Zeljko Ivanek) demands an answer to the riot’s cause, and he enlists Alvah Case (Charles S. Dutton) to investigate, promising him his support for state Attorney General. After a thorough investigation, he decides to look the other way in regard to Whittlesey and Ross’s cigarette operation and Ross’s subsequent murder, and he deems the riot a “no-fault” occurrence, incurring the wrath of Governor Devlin… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include “Great Men” in which Kareem Said sees the opportunity to have his conviction overturned when the judge from his trial is admonished for accepting bribes, and “Escape from Oz” in which two prisoners are killed when an escape tunnel collapses, while Said turns down a pardon from the Governor, making him all the more popular in Oz…

Below is a list of episodes included on the Oz (Season 2) DVD:

Episode 9 (The Tip) Air Date: 07-11-1998
Episode 10 (Ancient Tribes) Air Date: 07-20-1998
Episode 11 (Great Men) Air Date: 07-27-1998
Episode 12 (Losing Your Appeal) Air Date: 08-03-1998

Polarized Sunglasses

2 January 2009 | 8:19 | Finery | Comments Off

Polarized sunglasses are designed to absorb the reflective solar glare from flat surfaces like water, snow, and highways. These glasses can absorb up to 97% of the glare from such surfaces. Polarized sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory but also a safety device for navigators, water sportsmen, skiers, and drivers.

Shimmering water and pristine white snow can create a tremendous reflective glare from the sunlight incident on it. Even long road stretches can produce such glares. The iris in our eye has a natural mechanism of becoming narrow and blocking light, but it is unable to block such bright glares, which is where polarized sunglasses become useful.

Edwin H. Land invented polarized lenses in 1936. Ordinary light travels in the form of waves that can vibrate in all directions. Polarized sunglasses polarize the light, that is, they make the light vibrate only in one direction. Generally, surfaces that produce glares have horizontally polarized light. Sunglasses are fabricated with vertical polarization to block much of the incident light and reduce glares.

Polarized lenses are made with a synthetic plastic such as CR-39 or polycarbonate, with a polarization filter enclosed within it. The filter is made of a material whose molecules align vertically. They are good not only for anti-glare purpose but also for general trendy wear.

Authentic polarized sunglasses are more expensive than ordinary sunglasses. Many shops sell cheap polarized sunglasses that are nothing but replicas of the originals. A genuine polarized lens can be tested by rotating it in a particular direction and seeing if the glare through the lens changes in its intensity on rotation. A fake sunglass may in fact damage eyesight. It is always better (and safer) to invest a few more dollars in buying a genuine pair of polarized sunglasses rather than having the eyes suffer hazards.

Polarized sunglasses are apt for people suffering from eye disorders of long-distance vision such as hypermetropia and presbyopia, who still want to enjoy the thrills of adventure sports.

There are certain limitations associated with polarized sunglasses. People wearing polarized sunglasses may not be able to notice certain relief features on snow, as it blocks several of the light rays reflecting from it. This may be dangerous in thin ice. Another factor against polarized sunglasses is that they make LCDs almost invisible from certain angles since LCDs are also polarized light.

Due to their specialized technology, polarized sunglasses are priced higher than ordinary sunglasses. Cheaper ones are available for $75 and the price may go up to $300 depending on their brand names.

Private Investigators on TV - Spenser

1 January 2009 | 2:57 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Spenser (who had no first name) was the creation of author Robert B. Parker.

Spenser was a strange mixture in terms of sensitive and physical. He was a gourmet cook but also an ex-boxer, ex-serviceman and ex-Massachusetts State Trooper, he quoted poetry yet lifted weights. He liked really excellent food but would prefer to accompany it with a mug of beer rather than a fine wine. He was a romantic soul but happy to indulge in violence when necessary.

Spenser was born in Laramie, Wyoming. His mother died in childbirth and Spenser was brought up by his father and two uncles, all of whom were carpenters.

At the end of his above-mentioned colourful and mixed career, Spenser ended up in Boston as a private investigator. The location shooting in Boston was one of the highlights of the programme.

The television version of Spenser hit our screens in 1985 but came as something of a disappointment to fans of the novels. They considered that Robert Urich was unconvincing as Spenser, portraying him as rather smug, and that Barbara Stock playing Susan Silverman (Spenser’s sometime psychiatrist girlfried) could easily have been replaced by someone else. However, Avery Brooks as Hawk, Spenser’s best friend, was hailed as a great actor wasted on a secondary part. His car, a dark green mustang, was something of a hit.

The Susan love interest was replaced by DA Rita Fiori (played by Carolyn McCormick, in the second series when Susan left Spenser. However, by the third series, Susan was back.

The TV series had three runs over three years, then was pulled. A while later, four television movies appeared, with all the original cast in place. Unfortunately, these were, if anything, worse than the previous programmes and they weren’t even filmed in Boston.

Leather Corset

29 December 2008 | 19:56 | Finery | Comments Off

Corsets are more popular today then they were in the Victorian era. Better still, they are available in an array of fabrics such as satin, Chinese silk, velvet, brocade and leather. The most popular among women who like to feel sexy are leather corsets. A leather corset is exotic and signifies the fearless dominant woman who is not afraid of showing off her sexuality and “animal” instincts. For women who like the look of an hourglass figure, slimmer appearance and back or posture support, the leather corset is the answer. Or for those women who want to look sexy and join in on the latest fashion trend, the answer is an authentic leather corset. Many women love the feeling of confidence and sensuality they get when wearing a beautiful leather corset. There are even the more erotic uses of leather corsets for those who dabble in the fetish scene.

Because of their popularity, corsets are seen on fashion runways everywhere, and they are part of the movie scene in New York and Hollywood. Corsets are flourishing in Hollywood films and are being paraded down catwalks as one of the latest fashion trends.

For the indulgent woman, a hand crafted leather corset is an ideal gift from her lover. Most corsetieres have become very innovative when it comes to designing corsets. You will find leather corsets in unique designs including lace and leather; leather corsets with buckle and metal clasps. Of course, you can put wings to your flights of fantasy by getting a custom-made leather corset in your own unique fetish style. Leather goes well with metal.

Corset provides detailed information about corset, leather corset, corset lingerie, corset dress and more. Corset is the sister site of Layered Hair Styles.
