The wrap dress was created in 1973 by Diane von Frstenberg and came to symbolize a generation of women who wanted fabulous clothes that were easy to wear to work and in the evening. This dress was so important that it was added to the collection of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
After the creation of this dress Diane Von Frstenberg became a world famous designer and has continued to create fashions that flatter women ever since. The wrap dress did fall briefly out of favor in the 80’s when women were trying to achieve a more “power” look with suits and shoulder pads. It lifts the breasts and creates an hour glass figure. The wrap is great for traveling- it needs minimal care and ironing and its versatility means that it can be worn many times in many different ways.
Beware- do not fall for low end remakes of the wrap dress. Always make sure that you are buying high quality fabric. Cheap synthetics fabric will show all your flaws, wear out quickly and not give you the look you are trying to achieve. Many wrap dresses come in loud patterns or tacky floral. Choose your print wisely as this can be the difference between looking hot- or totally not.
Wrap dresses make great maternity wear. They accentuate a growing belly while making the rest of the body look slim. Wrap dresses also grow and stretch was your belly grows. You can wear it from the very first months through the last- and then again after you have the baby. How many dresses can do that? Not many.
The only people who shouldn’t wear wrap dresses are women who are too skinny and have flat chests- bet you never thought that you would hear that one! Skinny girls need to find something else to wear because the wrap dress will flap open if there is nothing to hold it up.
