Online Poker Tells

Poker is a game of people, not just cards, and the experts always advise watching your opponents to pick up “tells” - body language or reactions that reveal the player’s mood or thoughts at the casino.

When you are playing online poker, you can’t see your opponents so it’s harder to get a read on their reactions at the table. However, there are some clues you can look for to pick up online tells. Here a few:

Remember acting weak typically means a player has a strong hand and visa versa. This applies to online play too. A strong action may be an attempt to hide weakness, especially after the flop.

Delayed reactions can signal strength. A player who takes time to figure out a bet is probably holding something good.

Players often check their action box before the betting actually gets to them. When an action is almost instant, it usually is a good representation of their hand, i.e. a quick check is weak or on a draw, and an instant call is probably strong.

See if you can recognize a pattern to the other players use of the automatic check or raise boxes to find a predictable pattern in their betting action.
